2 Disadvantages to Using Vinyl Cornhole Wraps
Disadvantage #1
There are some cons to using wraps that you should be aware of before going this route. While they look awesome and you can use any graphic to decorate your boards, the wraps will eventually wear. You can combat some of this by reapplying a polycrylic or polyurethane coating every once in awhile, but chances are you will have to replace your wrap after a few years of use.
Disadvantage #2
The second problem is that the varnish will cause some inconsistency in how the boards play depending on how much of it is applied and what the weather is like where you use the boards. It can be sticky or it can be slick and it might vary depending on what the humidity is like where you are playing. While this may not be a deal breaker for everyone, it is important that you are aware of this before you plan on playing any type of official game.
If you plan on just having a wrap made for your wedding or you have a family get together once a year with a cornhole tournament, then you’re probably not going to have too much of a problem using cornhole skins. If you’re one of those people who have no issue with the durability and consistency of your boards, you can order your wrap online today and have it installed in no time if you want to do it yourself.
How to Apply Cornhole Wraps Yourself
The wraps are a printed vinyl that will come with an adhesive backing and transfer tape to help apply it to your boards. There are a few tools you will need to make sure you get the wraps installed correctly.
- Hair dryer / heat gun
- Applicator – a squeegee or credit card will work for this
- A roller to work out any of the air pockets that might form – rubber if possible
- Polycrylic wax or a polyurethane – if you use the wax – it will have to be applied with a foam brush
- Masking tape
- Razor blade
- Fine grit sandpaper
The process is pretty simple:
Apply a coat of the wax or urethane to make sure the surface is nice and smooth for your vinyl application. This should be done indoors so that you do not get any debris on the surface as it dries. After allowing to dry for 30 – 45 minutes using fine grit sandpaper, smooth out the coat of urethane. Then, take a wet rag and wipe the boards down and let it dry again for 10-15 minutes.
The next step is to apply the board wrap. It is critical to make sure that your vinyl decal lines up correctly on your board paying special attention to the hole if it is printed on the wrap. If not, you can cut the hole out with a razor blade after applying the wrap.
It’s tough to get every wood working project perfectly square and the vinyl wrap may have issues as well. Make sure that you position it correctly and then apply the masking tape to the decal to hold it in place as you apply.
Cut a section of the vinyl backing from the wrap and apply it using the squeegee or credit card starting in the middle of the board and working out to remove air bubbles. Remove the rest of the backing from the vinyl and apply it to the board holding out on the backing to keep it tight as you work your way down the board.
Once the vinyl wrap is applied run the squeegee over the decal again working outwards. From that point you should take the hair dryer and roller and work the entire surface of the board with heat to activate the adhesive. Don’t put too much heat in one area for an extended period of time because it will deform the wrap. If you end up with any air bubbles, you can make a small slit in them with your razor blade and press it down.
Once you have the wrap in place, carefully cut the hole out with a razor blade and cut any excess wrap from the board’s edge. The last step is to apply another coat of wax over the top of the decal if you would like. This will help to protect the vinyl and you will get the most life out of your wrap. You should apply a generous amount. If you want to make your boards slick, you can let the first coat dry for about 45 minutes and apply another coat of urethane or wax. The more coating you put on the boards, the slicker they will be.
Here’s a good video detailing the process if it is easier to follow along that way.
